"The most important thing people should do to fight AIDS is to listen to the youth. If we do this, we can win the fight.”

Sten Rylander –
Swedish
Ambassador

SPW Tanzania is a youth-led, youth-orientated NGO. We harness the energy and talents of educated young volunteers so that they can empower others to make more informed decisions about their health, and crucially, reduce their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. We play an important role in the Tanzanian national response to HIV/AIDS, and have been recognised as best practice by both government officials and donor agencies.

Our programmes include volunteer-led programmes in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, and an ex-volunteer network based in Dar es Salaam.

In the volunteer-led programmes, Tanzanian form 6 leavers conduct a range of youth empowerment activities in Secondary Schools, Primary Schools and with out of school youth, including Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) education and life skills training.

The Ex-Volunteer Network harnesses the dedication, skills and experience of former volunteers to conduct a range of activities in the Institutes of Higher Learning where the former volunteers are currently studying, and in the surrounding community.

Making things happen

SPW Tanzania is based at a head office in Iringa, and operates from programme offices in Iringa, Mbeya, Njombe and Dar es Salaam. Internationally, SPW is based in the UK, and also has country programmes in Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Sierra Leona, Nepal and India.

The enthusiasm, idealism and motivation of our volunteers is the key to our success. We recruit the best form VI school leavers and overseas volunteers to promote good health now, and in the future.
